These online classes are offered to folks wishing to expand their knowledge and experience with music in order to enhance their enjoyment and performance of music once our communities move back towards in person music making. We will be offering two courses per month beginning July, 2020. All Education Courses are Tuition Free.

Consider Music Theory (Music Literacy) like you would consider literacy in general. If a person can speak but not read, are they literate? If they can read but not write, are they literate? Total Musical Literacy involves the reading, writing, performance, and improvisation of music. This Musicianship Course will get participants to take the first few steps down the road to Total Music Literacy!

If you walked into a bookstore and didn't understand the concept of Genre, how easy or difficult would it be for you to find the kind of book you're looking for? Music deals in the same kinda of genres and choral music is no exception. In this introductory Musicianship Course, we will explore the most important genres of choral music and the masterworks that define them as we trace music written for choir through Western European Music History to the current day.

-----Introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet and Diction for Singers-----
Remembering details of specific vowel sounds and specific consonants while working simultaneously in 4-5 languages is not easy. It makes the life of a singer extremely challenging and rewarding! In this course, learn the basics of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and learn how to notate the specific sounds required to sing beautifully in all of the most major languages, and apply your knowledge to the study of languages in music.

-----A Focus on Choral Literature: The Requiem Mass-----
Some of the most dramatic and significant examples of the Choral Masterwork happen to be Requiem Masses. However, not every Requiem is created equal, and composers were expressing highly varied and personal things in their settings of this famous text. We will explore Requiems written by Faure, Brahms, Verdi, Mozart, and Britten to deepen our understanding and appreciation of these mammoth musical accomplishments.

-----A Focus on Choral Literature: The Choral Symphony-----
So you've heard of a Symphony, but have you heard of the Choral Symphony? We will study a few major examples of the Choral Symphony beginning with the prototypical Choral Fantasy by Beethoven and of course his inaugural Choral Symphony #9, before looking at Mahler's Symphony #2 "Resurrection" and Symphony #8 "The Symphony of a Thousand" and "Symphony of Psalms" by Stravinsky.
